Chapter 13: The House Key

Curtis said he would move into my listed house while the luncheon guests watched.

I stood before he could make it sound settled.

'You cannot move into a house you don't own.'

The woman who had withdrawn her support still held her program. She stopped folding it.

Curtis gave the guests his public smile.

'Maureen, our home is still my home. Must we make a scene out of a misunderstanding?'

He reached for the house key beside me.

I pulled it away and placed it in Bev's open hand.

Curtis's fingers stopped above the table.

Bev took the key. 'The house is listed. I'll give this to the realtor.'

She set it beside her folder of sale papers.

Curtis glanced at the folder, then at the guests.

'You're being selfish. You're throwing away the home I built.'

I looked at the people who had just heard him call it his.

'It's my house. I signed the papers to sell it.'

Curtis turned his attention back to me.

'You know what I meant.'

'I know what you said.'

The guest who had stepped away from him shifted her chair back again.

His claim had sounded easy when no one challenged it.

I had let the room hear the difference.
