Chapter 14: The Medal Rang Once

I walked up the center aisle with the phone in my fist.

Nobody stopped me, because they thought the forgiven wife was going to thank him.

Sawyer's smile held until I reached the steps.

"Hannah," he said, low, with his hand over the microphone. "Sit down. Please."

"No."

I took the microphone off the stand.

"My name is Hannah McCormick," I said, and my voice came back at me from the speakers, too loud.

"Sawyer McCormick got a medal tonight for Stafford Tower. I watched that rescue on a phone, from behind a police line."

"There were two children at that window. He sent the only ladder to one of them."

"My daughter was the other one. She held up her rabbit so somebody would see her."

The ballroom had gone completely quiet.

"There was a second ladder," I said. "Engine Nine had it raised on the east side. It could have reached her in under a minute."

"Captain McCormick radioed it away. Table nine, please."

The young firefighter stood up.

The older man stood beside him, and then the rest of the table, nine more in a row, until all eleven were on their feet.

"We heard the order," the young man said, loud enough to carry.

"All of us," said the older one.

Sawyer reached for the microphone.

I stepped back and he missed, and a murmur went through the room.

"She's in shock," he told them. "Her daughter's in the hospital. She's been awake for days."

"Let her finish, Captain," the chief said.

She had walked onto the stage without anyone noticing, and she stood two feet from him with her hat under her arm.

"He did it because of the boy," I said.
