Chapter 17: Station Nine

"Help him grieve," I said.

"She said he needed somewhere to put it. That kids need a reason." Scott rubbed his face with both hands. "I thought he'd grow out of it. I thought it didn't matter, because you'd always be there anyway."

"I was there. I was there every night while he said it to me."

"Robin."

"Goodnight, Scott."

I went in and shut the street door, and I locked it, and I sat on the bottom stair until I heard his engine start.

On Tuesday the cast came off.

The surgeon put me in a black walking boot and took one crutch away.

On Saturday Cal's station had its summer fundraiser.

He'd asked me twice and I'd said no twice.

The third time he said, "There's pulled pork," and I said yes.

Station Nine was a squat brick firehouse off Hawthorne with the bay doors rolled all the way up.

They'd pulled the engine out onto the apron and washed it until it shone.

Kids were climbing all over it in plastic helmets.

There were picnic tables in the bay, a smoker going in the side lot, and a raffle table with a quilt and a chainsaw.

Cal met me at the curb in a station T-shirt with his name on the back.

He didn't help me out of the truck. He waited until I'd done it, and then he handed me my crutch.

"You came," he said.
