Chapter 7: That Woman

I read the comments until two in the morning.

"Praying for Scott and that sweet baby."

"I always thought there was something off about the sister."

"She married her dead sister's husband within a year. Says it all."

A woman I'd taught to sing alto for a Christmas cantata had written, "Kristy was an angel. This one is a vulture."

Forty people had liked that.

Scott had liked it too.

On Monday I took a cab to the community music school on Division Street.

In June, before the trip, I'd applied for a summer job teaching voice to kids.

I hadn't told Scott. I'd wanted it to be mine for a little while first.

The director had called me the Thursday before the crash and hired me on the phone.

My first class was at ten.

I got up the front steps on the crutches, one at a time, with my bag of sheet music hanging around my neck.

There were a dozen kids in the lobby, seven and eight years old, with their parents on the benches along the wall.

The director came out of her office when she saw me.

She had reading glasses on her head, and she didn't smile.

"Robin. Can we step in here for a minute?"

"Is something wrong?"

"Let's talk in my office."

A mother on the bench by the door stood up.

She had her phone in her hand, and I knew what was on it before she turned it around.

"Is this her?" the mother said, to the director and not to me. "Is this the woman teaching my daughter?"

The lobby went quiet.

A little girl in a purple T-shirt looked up at me, then at her mother.

"Ma'am," the director said. "Let's not do this in front of the kids."

"I'm not doing anything. She's the one who shows up here after that." The mother held the phone higher. "Half of this lobby goes to that church. Everybody knows what she did to her sister."
