Chapter 26: The Cold Side of the Bed
The flat was too quiet.
Xiao Chen had lived alone in it for four years, and had never once noticed the silence.
He made tea and let it go cold on the counter.
He sat at the table with the folded scan beside the silver ring, and read the same clause of the will forty times.
Around eleven he gave up and went to bed.
The bed was wide, and he lay on the left side of it, which was his side.
The right side stayed flat and cold.
He had slept in that bed for a week with Shen Yan's knees against the backs of his legs and a hand that always found his ribs in the dark.
He turned over and looked at the bedside table.
A dented steel thermos stood there, with a yellow duck on the side.
He had taken it from the ward on the night he woke, before he knew whose it was.
Every night since, he had put it where he could reach it.
He touched the lid now.
It was cold, and a little greasy at the rim.
The buzzer sounded at ten to one.
He knew who it was before he reached the door.
Shen Yan stood in the hall in yesterday's jumper, with his hair on end and his eyes red.
He had come across the city by bus.
"I know the time," he said. "I'm sorry. I don't care."
"Come in."
"I can't stay. I came to ask you something and I want a straight answer."
He stayed in the doorway.
He held out the printed scan, folded small, the way Xiao Chen had folded his.
"Tell me this is your duty," he said. "If it is, say it. A lawyer, a client, two children, a signature. Say that is why you look after me, and I'll go home to my father and marry whoever he picks."
