Chapter 28: The Question

Shen Yan did not buy a new ring.

The old one was in Xiao Chen's coat, and Shen Yan had a plan, and he had slept four hours.

He went to Red Lantern Skewers at nine on Sunday night, when the market was loud and the charcoal was glowing, and he asked Auntie for his old apron.

"You're not working," she said.

"Only for one hour."

She looked at him for a long time over the grill.

"Is he coming?"

"Yes."

"Good," said Auntie, and tied the apron on herself.

Xiao Chen came at ten, in his dark coat, with a paper bag in one hand and a careful look on his face.

He stopped at the edge of the lantern light.

Shen Yan was standing behind the counter with a tray of skewers.

His hands were steady. That surprised him.

"Table four is free," he said. "Sit down, Lawyer Xiao."

Xiao Chen sat at the folding table where he had once sat, six weeks ago, with a cup of tea he did not drink.

Shen Yan put down a plate of lamb, and a plate of leeks, and a pot of plain tea, made badly on purpose.

Then he sat across from him.

It was an ordinary stool, and the table rocked.

"I did the ledger," Shen Yan said.

He took a small notebook out of his apron and laid it on the table.

It was the debt book. Every line was crossed out with one neat stroke.

"Everything I owed you. Rice, the doctor, the bed. I crossed it out last night."

"I tore the page out already."

"You tore out one page. I did the rest. We don't owe each other anything now."

He folded his hands.

"So I can ask you this as someone who is not in debt."

Xiao Chen set down his chopsticks.

"I have my mother's shares," Shen Yan said. "You've heard it. They need a signature on every vote for ten years, and the signature is yours."

"Yan."

"Let me finish. I talked to the executor. I do not want you to be a name on a form. I want you to be a partner, and I want you to be able to say no to me."

His throat was tight.

"I'll say no to you too. When I think you're wrong, I'll tell you at the table, not in the dark. That's the first thing."

"And the second?"

"I'll work. I'll sit on the board and learn the trade, and I'll make my own mistakes. You don't clean them up before I see them."
