Chapter 12: Shared Plan

I stared at the photo until my hands stopped shaking.

Then I made myself think like triage.

Not "how scared am I." What's bleeding. Where's it coming from.

He knew where I was at midnight on a Saturday.

I hadn't told anyone but Jesse.

I hadn't driven. Jesse had.

So it was me. Something I carried.

I opened my phone settings and scrolled down to the family plan.

There it was.

Family: Bryce Daltrey (organizer). Casey Wardlow.

Location sharing: on.

I'd turned off the map app the night of the crash. I'd never once thought about the phone bill.

The phone bill was in his name.

The phone bill could see me.

I sat on the kitchen floor and laughed, because the alternative was throwing the phone into Lake Michigan.

On Monday I went to the phone store when it opened.

New number. New plan. In my own name, paid out of my academy account.

The young guy at the counter helped me move everything over.

"You want to leave the old family plan?" he said. "The organizer gets a notification."

"Good," I said. "Let him."

Then I went out to the Subaru and sat in it with the heat running.

The car had an app too. Remote start, door locks, and a little map.

The account was in Bryce's email.

I called the dealer.

It took forty-five minutes on hold and one very patient service woman who'd seen my video.

"Okay," she said finally. "I've removed the connected services from the vehicle. As far as the app's concerned, this car doesn't exist."

"Thank you."

Then I sat there with my hands on the wheel.

I could hand all this to my lawyer.

She'd write a letter. His lawyer would write a letter back.

He'd keep his calm, scored, private little life, and the engineer would be the only one who paid.
