Chapter 13: Before He Does
Livia slept four hours in Mirella's hotel suite on Park Avenue and woke up with the decision already made.
She said it over coffee, before Mirella had finished her first cup.
"We play it ourselves."
"Play what?" Mirella said.
"The stairs. Aldo is holding that video over Luca's head until Friday. So it stops being a thing he holds."
Mirella put down her cup.
"Liv, it's you on the floor at the bottom of it."
"I know where I am in it."
The doorbell rang before either of them said more.
Luca stood in the corridor in yesterday's suit, with no phone in his hand and a small black drive in his palm.
He held it out flat, as if it might be refused.
"The house recorder in Sands Point," he said. "My father's security people only get the feed. This is the original."
Mirella looked at the drive, then at her sister.
"Is that a gift?" she said. "Because the rules said no gifts."
"It's evidence," Luca said. "It's yours. Do what you want with it."
Livia took it.
Her fingers touched his palm for less than a second, and neither of them mentioned it.
"I'm not watching it," she said.
"You don't have to."
"I know I don't. I lived it." She put the drive on the table. "You're going to stand on your own front steps and tell people what's on it. Then you give it to the people who ask."
"Today?"
"Today. Your father picked Friday. I'm picking this morning."
He nodded.
He didn't argue, and she realized she had braced for him to.
