Chapter 7: Room Nine

There were four reporters in the corridor outside Room Nine, and one of them had a camera on his shoulder.

They turned as the elevator opened, and the whole hallway made a sound.

"Mrs. Benedetti!"

"Mrs. Benedetti, did you push Tierney Holloway?"

Livia walked toward them with her sister beside her.

The camera swung from one face to the other and back, and the questions stopped.

"I'm Mirella Benedetti," Mirella said. "I landed yesterday. I was in Lisbon on Thursday night."

"Then who is..."

"My name is Livia Carrano," Livia said.

She said it clearly, so the microphone would catch it.

"I'm her twin sister. I've lived as Mirella for three years, and I was the woman in the jacket in that photo. I left the Marlowe Club at nine-oh-six. I was home before ten. I never went near that terrace."

For a moment nobody wrote anything down.

Then they all wrote at once.

A door opened down the hall and a nurse looked out. "This is a hospital," she said.

"We're going in," Livia said.

Room Nine was large and bright, with flowers on every flat surface.

Tierney lay propped against four pillows with a cast on her right leg and a collar at her neck.

Her hair had been brushed, and she was wearing a little pink lipstick.

Aldo Benedetti sat in the armchair beside the bed, a silver-haired man with a navy coat folded over his knee.

He rose when they came in.
