Chapter 10: The Second Video

Lena's POV

Cal came back up the loft stairs with the work van keys still in his hand and a hard look on his face.

"Don't read the comments," he said.

"Give me your phone."

"Lena."

I held out my hand until he put it there.

I watched the video standing up, with my bag still over my shoulder.

It ran about a minute.

It showed me by the car, in my dress, with my back to the lens.

It showed Cal's face when the mask came off.

Then it cut to a still of me in his flannel shirt at the loft window.

My hair was in my face and my mouth was open.

The title said I hadn't walked out on my wedding.

It said I had walked out to him.

The count in the corner said 600,000 views.

"Rule two," I said.

"I didn't tell anyone."

"I know."

"I went to the marina. I wanted to..."

"I know you didn't tell anyone," I said. "Someone was at the fence at dawn."

My phone rang in my bag.

The screen said CLINIC.

I picked up, and my boss spoke carefully, in the voice of a man reading from a script.

"Lena. I'm not firing you. Hear that first. But we've got two reporters in the parking lot and a client who wants to know if you're, quote, an honest person."

"I'm an honest person."

"I know that, and I'll say so to anyone. But take the week. Paid. Let it blow over."

"It won't blow over," I said. "They want it to be my fault."
