Chapter 11: The Night After

The judge kept us in chambers for ten minutes.

She read the test results, then she read the credit union transfer records Kurt's lawyer had filed that morning.

She said one sentence that I will remember until I die.

"Mr. Bissell, a man who is told he has a daughter does not usually start by starving her mother."

Lowell opened his mouth and she raised one hand.

"Maisy Gleason remains in her parents' home pending a full hearing in two weeks," she said. "The credit union will open its books to this court. Mr. Bissell, you will have no contact with the child outside this room."

Kurt squeezed my fingers so hard it hurt.

We walked out into the hall, past the women from my church, who had all gone very quiet.

One of them stood up and touched my arm.

"I'm sorry, Emmeline," she said. "We should have brought you food."

I nodded and could not speak.

We picked up Maisy from the neighbor's and brought her home, and she demanded to be told what a hearing was.

"It's when grownups say sorry in front of a lady," Kurt told her.

"Did you say sorry?"

"I said it a lot."

That night I put her to bed and read her two stories, and when I came downstairs the house was dark except for one lamp.

Kurt sat on the arm of the couch with his boots off.

He looked up.

"I owe you the rest," I said. "All of it. About that night, and about why I never told you."

"Come here."

"Kurt."

"Come here and say it."

I sat on the couch beside him, and I said it.

I told him the part I had never told anyone: the stranger's face was a blur by the time I met him, and I had never once looked for him.
