Chapter 19: The Holding Room
The deputy cuffed Lowell Bissell against his own office wall.
"Lowell Bissell," he said. "You're under arrest for taking a child from school with a false court order."
"That is absurd," Lowell said.
"And for forgery, and for a few other things my sheriff will tell you at the station."
The deputy walked him down the stairs by the arm.
I followed with Maisy on my hip, and Kurt walked beside me with his hand on my back.
The entire store watched.
Shoppers stood in the aisles with full carts.
Women held their children's hands.
Behind the deli counter a girl in a green apron took off her apron and set it on the counter.
"I quit," she said, to no one.
At the produce stand a stock boy took off his name tag.
Another followed him.
Then an old cashier, a woman Lowell had hired thirty years ago, turned her register light off and walked out the front door ahead of us.
Lowell saw it all.
He held his head up and his back straight until the deputy put him in the patrol car.
At the station, a woman in a plain gray suit was waiting in the lobby.
She held up a badge for Kurt.
"Staff Sergeant Gleason? Army Criminal Investigation. I'm told your pay was diverted for fourteen months."
"It was stolen," Kurt said.
"It was federal pay," she said, "which makes it a federal crime. I've pulled the transfer records the judge opened this morning. The man we have in the back is facing charges with prison time, not a fine."
"How much time?"
"Wire fraud and theft from a military allotment, plus forgery, plus the school. Ten years on the first count alone."
I sat down on a bench, because my legs would not hold me.
