Chapter 16: The Town Hall
Lena's POV
I came down the clinic stairs with fresh dressings on both hands and held out my palm.
Hayes put the tablet into it without a word.
I did not play the recording a second time.
I had seen enough through the clinic glass, in the faces of two men in a car.
"Where's she going to be tonight?" I asked.
"The Sentinel customers' meeting in Malibu," Fred said. "Seven o'clock, at the community hall. She called it herself this morning, to calm everyone down."
"Then so will I."
Hayes drove, because I could not grip a wheel, and Fred sat in the back with his arms folded.
At the red light on Pacific Coast Highway, Hayes's hand lay on the gearshift a few inches from my knee.
I looked at it for the whole length of the light.
It was a large, clean, steady hand, and it had changed my bandage once.
I looked out the window.
The community hall was packed.
Three hundred folding chairs stood in rows, and people were standing along the walls, in fleece and flip-flops, with faces I knew from the fire.
Some of them had lost houses.
Camille was not on the stage.
In her place stood a thin man in a navy suit with a lanyard that read Deputy Chief Operating Officer.
"Ms. Chilton sends her apologies," he said into the microphone. "She is visiting with families in mourning. I want to assure everyone that the Sentinel network performed within its design limits on the night of the fourteenth."
A man in the third row said something I couldn't hear.
"Within limits," the deputy repeated. "What happened to the Grosvenor household that night was a private tragedy, made worse by a family member's decision to go public with personal grief."
