Chapter 26: The Last Look

The press came out of the revolving door behind him.

Five of them, then ten, with cameras and phones up, spreading across the hotel steps.

The crew stood in a half circle on the pavement around Peggy and her trunk.

Nobody moved to stop anyone filming.

Pierce didn't seem to notice them.

He was looking at me.

"You'll come back," he said again, quieter. "Seven years, Laura. You don't just walk away from seven years."

I put my hand in the pocket of my apron.

The black card was where I'd put it that morning, under a stub of chalk and a spool of waxed thread.

I'd carried it for three months.

I'd never once taken it out.

"On September ninth," I said, "you told your friend to make sure my flight was confirmed."

His face changed a little.

"It was," I said. "I changed it that night. One way."

I held the card out to him.

"You said no limit. I never used it."

He didn't take it.

He looked at it in my hand.

So I reached past Oliver and slid it into the breast pocket of his jacket, where the wine had soaked through.
