Chapter 22: All Hands
Tilda's POV
Bay Six was open to the yard, with its big doors rolled up and its forklifts parked in a line.
Nine hundred people stood on the concrete in work jackets and hi-vis vests, with coffee cups steaming in the cold.
Gavin had set a microphone on a flatbed trailer and was standing beside it in a gray suit.
He'd shaved, and his jaw was still yellow.
I came through the crowd with Emmett on my left and Odette on my right, and the people in front of us stepped aside without a word.
My mother was in the front row in a folding chair with a blanket over her knees and an aide at her side.
She lifted two fingers to me from under the wool.
"Thank you for coming," Gavin said into the microphone, at eight exactly. "I won't keep you."
"Yesterday a group of directors, led by my wife, voted to remove me. I'd like to explain why, because you deserve the truth."
"My wife is unwell."
He said it kindly, almost sadly.
"I've protected her for a year. She forgets. She spends money she doesn't have. She's been manipulated by a man who is facing assault charges, and by a young woman who's confessed to being unstable."
"I did what I could. I'm sorry it came to this."
Two sheriff's cars rolled into the yard behind the crowd, slowly, with no sirens.
Gavin glanced at them, and I saw him relax.
"Ah," he said into the microphone. "Right on time."
Two deputies came through the people with a folded paper.
"Emmett Rourke?" the older one said.
"Here."
"I have a warrant for your arrest on a charge of assault. I'm sorry, sir. I'd like you to come with us quietly."
A sound rolled across the yard, deep and displeased.
