Chapter 15: Number Twelve

Bruce's POV

I had worn the Sutton badge for four years, and the doorman still asked me to sign in.

"Mr. Sutton isn't taking visitors tonight, Mr. Donovan."

"He'll take me."

"Sir, the company never accepted your resignation. It put you on leave this morning."

"Call up and say it's the pilot with the tape," I said.

He picked up the house phone and said it in a low voice.

He listened.

He put it down and did not meet my eyes.

"Penthouse. He says come up now."

The elevator was the one Gianna had walked into with a go-bag and an urn.

I rode it with a thumb drive in my pocket and my heart going hard.

Leonard opened the door himself, in a rumpled white shirt with the cuffs undone.

He looked ten years older than he had on the tarmac.

"Bruce," he said. "If this is about the photographs, I didn't authorize them."

"It isn't about the photographs."

"Then what?"

"It's about 3:58 a.m. on the fourteenth," I said.

His face went still.

I walked past him into the living room.

The marble mantel was bare.

I saw him see me looking at it.

"She put it right there," he said. "She said she'd carry her."

"I know."

"I didn't understand what she meant. I thought it was a vase." His voice cracked on the last word. "Celia told me Rosa was in a care home."

"Rosa is dead, Mr. Sutton. She died on the fire road."

He sat down very slowly on the arm of the sofa.

I took the laptop from my bag and set it on the glass table.

I plugged in the drive.

"I'm going to play you forty seconds," I said. "I flew the helicopter. My voice is on it. I'm not going to ask you to forgive me. I want you to hear who gave the order."

"Play it."

I pressed the key.

The cockpit noise came up first, the idling rotor and the headset hiss.

Then Celia, bright and clear, giving the order.
