Chapter 20: The Airframe Release
By Wednesday night there were forty people in Hank's hangar and a black car parked in the dark behind the fuel tank.
Leonard had come in on foot from the car, in a plain coat, with no driver.
He stood by the workbench where the check had sat in the syrup and did not know where to put his hands.
"Two days," Hank said. "That's what she left us."
"The launch is Friday at ten," Leonard said. "The board meets Friday at nine."
"Why the board?"
"A vote of no confidence, over my judgment. She's been lining up the proxies for a week. By the time the doors open I won't be chief executive of anything."
"So you can't walk onto that stage," said the old man with the white mustache.
"I can't walk through the front door."
The inspector's car had come and gone that afternoon.
He had cleared the two Bells in two days and brought a second letter for Bruce.
The psychiatric flag on Bruce's certificate had been entered from a Sutton Aviation login at 5:48 on Tuesday morning.
Nobody had been in the building but Celia.
Bruce held the letter in his hand and read it twice.
"Clear," he said. "It says clear."
"She's a person who leaves fingerprints," said the medic.
"She's a person who has never been caught," I said.
I looked around the circle.
"So we don't ask her for the stage," I said. "We bring it to her."
Leonard frowned.
"Sentinel One is the centerpiece of the show," Bruce said. "She's built the whole launch around it. At ten o'clock the helicopter comes in over the crowd and lands on a pad beside the stage, and the livestream cuts to the cockpit camera."
"Who's flying it?" the woman with two children asked.
"Her contract pilot. Some man who's never been over a ridge."
