Chapter 13: Her Price

I let Dalton's text sit until morning.

At six I carried two coffees out to the yard, where Jonah had slept in the cab of the tow truck.

Neither of us had said where he should go, so he hadn't gone anywhere.

He rolled the window down and took the cup.

I held my phone out to him with the draft already typed.

"My price," I said. "Read it."

He read it with his lips pressed together.

"Two minutes at the podium. A seat at the head table, with Dalton next to me. Nobody touches my microphone. Answer by noon."

"Too small?"

"It's perfect." He handed it back. "He'll say yes. He thinks you'll spend the two minutes saying you were confused."

"I'll say something."

"Hannah."

"I'll say something," I said again, and sent it.

The answer came before the coffee cooled.

"Yes. Whatever you need. Thank you, Han."

I stared at the end of it.

"He's thanking me," I said.

"He's thanking the version of you in his head." Jonah turned the paper cup in his bandaged hand. "I want to say something before we plan any of this, and you're going to hate it."

I leaned on the truck door.

"Go on."

"I don't touch you until the gala is done."

The yard went quiet, and the old pump ticked.

"After last night I'd be lying if I said I didn't want to," he said. "But I'm the man with the tape. If I'm in your bed this week, you'll wonder in a year whether it was the tape. So will I. I won't be paid with it."
