Chapter 17: The License

Jonah's POV

The county gave me a clipboard, a pen, and a notary who worked the records window and didn't ask what it was for.

I sat on the concrete bench outside the jail and wrote it out in my own hand.

My name.

My certificate numbers.

The date, and the time, and the words I had put off for twenty-four days.

"At 04:09 I received a medical call on the Redwing priority line. I knew the patient was on Larch Ridge Road, four minutes from my aircraft. At 04:11 I was ordered to divert to a private ranch to carry a dog. I knew the order was wrong. I accepted it twice."

I stopped.

Nobody had made me write that last line, and nobody could have.

Once it was signed, the state aviation board would read it, and the board would do to my certificate what it was written to do.

I would not fly again for a living.

I knew that, sitting there.

I wrote the rest anyway.

I wrote about Piper Lanning on her lawn at 4:12, in a bathrobe, holding the crate up to me with both hands.

I had asked her whether the fire was near her fence.

She had said, "Dal says to hurry, he's shaking."

The dog was not shaking.

He had licked my wrist while I carried him, because he was an old dog who liked everybody.

I wrote down that I had sat on her lawn nine minutes with the rotors turning, and that I had lifted off at 4:21 and flown the dog to the base.

I wrote down that I had put my headset on Dalton's desk at 5:30, next to the keys.

I didn't write about the sound of the girl on the tape calling for her grandmother.

That wasn't evidence.
