Chapter 2: Declined Air Transport
Redwing says Hannah declined transport. She posts the log, and Dalton says the wrong thing in front of her neighbors. A stranger texts: I flew Two.
Redwing posted its statement at noon, while I was sitting at Gran's kitchen table in yesterday's jeans.
"Aircraft Two was committed to a priority evacuation during the Tamarack Fire. Mrs. Ames, reached by phone, declined air transport and chose to wait for county crews. We grieve with the family."
I read it three times.
I had never declined anything.
I had begged.
The kitchen was full of people who had come with food and didn't know where to put it.
The woman from the orchard stand had brought a ham, and the man from the next ridge had brought a pie he'd baked himself.
Nobody was eating.
They were all watching me read.
"What does it say?" the man with the pie asked.
I turned the phone around and showed him.
He read it with his lips moving, then set the pie down very carefully on Gran's good tablecloth.
"That's a lie," he said.
"Yes."
I opened the Redwing app and took a screenshot of the flight log.
04:09, NOT DISPATCHED.
04:11, REDIRECTED, priority request, P. Lanning, animal evacuation, authorized D. Ames.
MEDICAL: HOLD.
I posted it to the Pine Hollow community page, where Gran had sold her apples for forty years.
Under it I wrote one sentence: "My grandmother died at 4:17 a.m. The helicopter that was four minutes away was sent for a dog at 4:11, and this is Redwing's own log."
Then I put the phone face down on the table and drank a glass of water.
In ten minutes, the post had four thousand shares.
In an hour, it had forty thousand.
My phone lit up with Dalton's name fourteen times, and I let it ring out fourteen times.
At three o'clock a white SUV came up Gran's gravel drive and stopped by the apple stand.
Dalton got out of the driver's side.
A thin man in a quarter-zip got out of the other side with a tablet under his arm.
The neighbors came out onto the porch without being asked, and stood in a row.
Some of them already had their phones up.
I walked down the steps and stopped at the bottom, because I didn't want him on the porch.
"Han." Dalton held both hands out, open. "Take it down."
"No."
"People are calling the company line. Members are calling." He kept his voice low and level. "I'm trying to protect the people who depend on us."
"Like I depended on you."
The thin man stepped forward.
"Mrs. Ames, a short correction to the page would help everyone. A grieving woman, a very understandable mistake about timing."
"There's no mistake," I said. "It's your log."
Dalton breathed in through his nose.
"Hannah. Gran was already gone by 4:11. You know that. There was nothing a helicopter could have done."
"She died at 4:17."
He blinked.
"I was holding her," I said. "She was breathing at 4:11. I watched the dot on your app turn around, Dalton. I watched it."
"Then she was dying." His voice rose for the first time. "Han, she was eighty-one years old. Pip's dog is fourteen. I made a call in the middle of a fire, and I'd make it again."
Nobody on the porch moved.
Somebody's phone clicked off a picture.
The man with the pie came down one step.
"Say that again," he said. "I want to be sure I got it."
The thin man took Dalton's elbow.
"We're leaving."
Dalton shook him off and looked at me, and for a second he was the boy I had married at twenty-four.
"You're doing this in public," he said. "In front of everyone."
"You did it in public first."
He stared at me a moment longer.
Then he got into the SUV and shut the door, and the thin man got in beside him, and the tires threw gravel against the apple stand all the way down the drive.
The woman from the stand put an arm around my shoulders.
"We got every word," she said. "Every single word."
I went back inside to Gran's kitchen and sat at her table, with her reading glasses still folded next to the salt.
My phone buzzed face down against the wood.
It wasn't Dalton.
It was a number I didn't know.
"This is the pilot who flew Two. I'm sorry. I have the tape."
