Chapter 14: Say It
Rett pushed Ward through the bedroom door at ten in the morning, with sunlight pouring over the floorboards.
Two years of fury had gone out of him.
"Take me upstairs," he had said on the sun porch.
Ward had taken him up three flights without a word, one hand wrapped around his wrist.
Now the door swung shut, and Rett pressed him against it and kissed him.
It was not a gentle kiss.
It was the kiss of a man who had been wrong for so long that the correction hurt.
"You kept them," Rett said against his mouth.
"Yes," Ward said.
"You sat in them."
"Every night," Ward said.
"You played my voice." Rett's hands pushed up under the shirt, flat on the hot ribs.
"You listened to me hate you, and you stayed up."
"I did." Ward's head tipped back to the wood. "It was the best part of the day."
Rett made a sound that was half a laugh and half a sob.
He stripped Ward's shirt off over his head, and Ward let him, and held up his arms.
The bedroom was large and plain, with tall windows and a high iron bed.
Nothing in it was a Bonneau.
Rett noticed that, and noticed that it was deliberate.
There was a single old chest of drawers, a rag rug, and a white quilt.
The whole room had been left bare as a place to sleep.
"Where did you put the bed frame?" he asked.
"Downstairs, in the guest room. I couldn't sleep in it," Ward said.
"Why not?"
"It was yours. I'd wake up and think you were in the room," Ward said.
Rett swallowed.
"Get on the bed," he said.
Ward lay down on the white quilt in his trousers.
Rett stood over him and unbuttoned his own shirt, slowly, with his eyes on the grey ones watching him.
"You said I owned things so I never had to feel them," Ward said.
