Chapter 18: The Rocker
"Left side," Rett said. "No, your other left."
"I only have one left," Ward said.
"Then use it."
Ward leaned his weight on the bar clamp and tightened it a quarter turn.
Glue squeezed out of the joint in a pale bead.
It was Tuesday afternoon, with the shop doors thrown open to a cold clear light.
The rocker lay on its side across two sawhorses, with its runners clamped and its back posts in wedges.
It had taken them two days.
Rett had cut every piece by hand, with the new chisels.
The oak was a plank he had been saving for four years without knowing why.
Dell had planed.
Ward had held things, and fetched things, and been told repeatedly where to stand.
"It's good," Dell said from the other side, in the tone of someone commenting on weather. "It's very good."
"Don't jinx it," Rett said.
"I'm not jinxing. I'm observing."
"Observe quietly," Rett said.
Dell shrugged and went back to sanding, and Rett stepped back to look.
The rocker had a high slatted back, wide arms, and a seat dished to take a person's weight.
Its runners swept out in a long clean curve, and the whole thing wanted to tip forward and sit up like something alive.
