Chapter 21: Dot's Table
The clubhouse was full on Tuesday night, and for the first time the wives sat at the long table with the men.
Nobody had told them to.
Dot came in first, in her scrubs and denim vest, and sat down in the chair at the president's left.
Then Delilah's mother came in with Hattie asleep on her shoulder, and the women made room for her.
Jared stood at the back wall, with a bandage on his knuckles.
Gage was not there.
"I called this table," the president said, "because I have a question, and I'd like it answered in front of the people who cook the food."
He looked down the benches.
"Does this club keep Sunday dinner?"
"What do you mean, keep it?" a patch asked.
"I mean that for thirty years, we've sat at this table, and a woman who told the truth got put out of it with nothing." His voice was dry. "I'd like to know if we deserve a Sunday."
Nobody answered.
Then a wife near the kitchen door put up her hand.
It was the one who had turned her face away from me on the first Sunday.
"I want to say something," she said.
"Go ahead."
She stood up with her hands twisting in her apron.
"I told people Mara brought the shooter," she said. "I said it at my own table, with my kids listening. I believed a woman I'd met twice, because it was easier than asking what my husband knew."
She looked at me.
"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry, Mara."
"Thank you," I said.
"That's not enough."
"It's a start."
A second wife stood up, and a third.
"Delilah told me the same thing," one said.
