Chapter 11: Three in the Morning
Allegra's POV
When I came back from my mother's call, Dominic's office was empty.
The grey cabinet was locked, the desk was clean, and Tobias was gone.
I stood in the doorway for a while, listening to the floor go quiet around me.
I didn't know whether I had just watched a man discover the truth or watched him act.
At three in the morning, my phone lit up on the hotel nightstand.
I read the text without sitting up.
I read the folder. Come to the Newark terminal, the yard office by gate six. Come alone.
I woke Stefano instead.
He opened his door in a hotel robe, with his curls flattened on one side.
"Tell me it isn't a text from the fiancé," he said.
"It is."
"Tell me you aren't going."
"I'm going."
"Then tell me I'm driving," he said, and he went to find his shoes.
The Newark terminal never closes.
Floodlights burned over stacks of containers, and the cranes stood dark against the sky.
A guard waved us through when I said Tobias's name.
The yard office was a long cabin with a lit window and a space heater running inside.
Tobias stood when we came in.
He was in the same grey suit, with the jacket gone and his tie off.
On the metal desk in front of him lay two neat stacks of paper.
"Alone," he said, looking at Stefano.
"No," said Stefano, and shut the door behind us. "I'm her cousin, and I'm very rude."
Tobias nodded.
"These are copies of everything," he said. "The sale, the debt schedule, the transfer and the guarantees. I used the printer here. Nothing on this yard has a camera pointed at it, and Dominic has never set foot in the office."
