Chapter 15: The Wrong Color
Allegra's POV
Stefano ran the drive through his laptop twice before he let anyone near it.
"No traps," he said. "No hidden program. Just video, and a very bad poker table."
It was past midnight in the suite.
My mother sat very straight at the head of the sofa.
Tobias stood by the window with his hands behind his back.
Stefano pressed play.
Dominic's kitchen came up on the screen in clear color.
A legal pad lay on the walnut table, with my name written down it in a dozen slanted lines.
Colette sat over it with a pen, her tongue between her teeth.
"Slower," Dominic said off screen. "She lifts the pen after the second L. Every time. Watch the tail of the g."
"I'm doing it."
"You're doing a Colette. Do an Allegra."
Colette tried again.
Dominic leaned into the frame and looked at the page.
"Better. Now the seal." He laid a flat wax disc on the table. "Your impression is perfect. The jeweler cut it from that."
"I made that impression in the storage room," Colette said, pleased with herself. "The week of the funeral. She was crying so hard she never saw me press it. I held her hand the whole time."
I did not move.
I remembered that day exactly.
Colette had sat on the floor of my storage room with her shoes off, holding my hand while I sorted my father's desk.
I had thanked her.
My mother said nothing at all.
On screen, Dominic poured a whiskey and raised it.
"To Toby," he said. "May he never read a thing."
"To Toby," said Colette, and she laughed.
Stefano stopped the video.
He didn't make a joke, and that was how I knew how bad it was.
