Chapter 6: Friday

By Friday afternoon, we had moved into the family's suite at a hotel on Park Avenue.

The burn had been dressed twice, and I had slept for four hours on a sofa while my mother read papers across the room.

Stefano had spent the whole day on three phones at once.

"That's the sixth lender," he said, dropping onto the arm of my sofa. "They all say the same thing. They'd like a quick word with Mr. DePeyster."

"Did you tell them where to find him?"

"I told them he was in a very busy mood." He grinned. "Dominic's assistant called us twice to ask why a Milan fund was suddenly the name on every red flag. I said I'd have someone get back to her."

"Who?"

"Nobody. I'm the nobody."

Despite everything, I smiled.

It was the first time I had smiled since Thursday night.

My mother looked up over her glasses.

"Allegra. You have a visitor downstairs. He has been in the lobby for two hours."

I didn't have to ask.

"Tell him I'm not coming down," I said.

"He asked me to tell you one thing," Stefano said. "He said you'd know what it meant. He said, 'I didn't sign it.'"

I stood up too fast, and the burn pulled.

"He knows about the transfer?"

"Dominic told him a Milan fund froze it. He's guessing the rest."

My mother took off her glasses.

"Let him come up," she said. "I would like to look at his chin."

Tobias came into the suite alone.

He had not slept, and it showed in the grey under his eyes.
