Chapter 4: The Bag

I stood at the top of the stairs and couldn't make my legs go in.

Beppe came back to the doorway.

"Miss Cordero. They need to close the door."

"What's that bag for, Beppe?"

He looked at me with his sad, heavy face.

"Please sit down."

"Answer me."

"I'll answer you in the air," he said. "Not here. There are eyes on this field."

I looked back.

Rocco's car was gone.

Another car sat at the far end of the hangar with its lights off.

I went inside.

The cabin was cream leather and polished wood.

The bag lay across two seats at the back.

I sat as far from it as I could.

Beppe sat across from me and buckled in.

The door sealed with a soft thump.

The plane rolled, and turned, and ran, and lifted.

I watched New Jersey fall away into little orange lights.

Then it was just black water.

Beppe unbuckled and went to the galley.

He came back with two glasses of whiskey and set one in front of me.

"I don't drink on planes," I said.

"Tonight you do."

I didn't touch it.

He sat down and put his big hands on his knees.

"My mother ate at your father's place every Friday," he said. "The oxtail. She said it was the only thing in Brooklyn that tasted like somebody loved you."

"Is that why you'll make it quick?"

He flinched.

"That's for you," he said, and nodded at the bag. "But you're not going in it. Not really."

"Beppe."

"Listen to me. Mr. Greco wants you dead. That was his price for the merger. No Cordero girl, no deal. He found out who you were a month ago."
