He Signed the Divorce Without Reading Page Nine novel · Chapter 1 of 48
Chapter 1: The Toast
Trevor announces his mistress's pregnancy at their tenth anniversary party and Claire gets him to sign divorce papers, including page nine. A stranger holds the elevator and calls her by her maiden name.
My husband used our tenth anniversary toast to announce that his girlfriend was pregnant.
The guests clapped.
A man near the stage whistled.
His mother pressed a napkin to her eyes and cried with joy.
I stood three feet away with a folder in my hand.
Trevor stood at the microphone on the rooftop bar of our flagship store, with the whole city lit up behind him.
He looked a little shy, the way he did at charity dinners, and he glanced at his watch once between sentences.
"Claire built this life with me," he told the crowd. "We grew apart, and she's known for a long time. We're all adults here."
I had not known. Not this time.
Madison stood next to him in a white silk dress.
White, at my anniversary.
She was twenty-four, she had two million followers, and she had been our brand ambassador since March.
Three minutes earlier Trevor had named her our new creative director.
One of her hands rested on a stomach that barely showed.
"Finally," his mother said, loud enough for me to hear. "A real grandchild."
Ten years of marriage. Three rounds of IVF that Trevor skipped for board meetings.
His mother had blamed me for every one of them.
By the coat check, one man did not clap.
He was tall, in a dark suit, with his arms folded, and he was looking at me instead of at the stage.
I put the folder on the bar and opened it.
"Trevor, I was going to give you these tomorrow," I said. "Tonight works."
He flipped the cover page, visibly relieved.
"Thank you, Claire. I've been dreading this talk for months."
Months. That tracked.
He pulled a pen from his jacket and found the signature line.
"No house?" he asked. "No alimony? No shares?"
"Only what I brought into the marriage."
"Your grandmother's recipe box?"
"That's right."
He signed with a flourish.
Madison giggled into her sparkling water.
I slid the second paper across the bar.
"My resignation," I said. "Effective tonight."
He signed that one without looking down.
"You've been burned out for years," he said, very kind now. "Go rest. Find yourself."
What he meant was that he no longer had to fire me.
I had built his company, and my name was on nothing.
Page nine of the settlement was four short paragraphs, and I had written them myself.
They said the Tea Rose formulas belong to the Winslow Family Trust, and Langley Skin may use them only while we are married.
The Tea Rose line was seventy-one percent of his sales.
He had signed that page once at twenty-eight without reading it.
Tonight he signed it again.
The IPO was thirty days away, and the bankers were downstairs drinking his champagne.
What nobody on that roof could know was that I had already lived this night.
The first time, I threw my drink in Madison's face.
I cried in the bathroom, and I let Patricia walk me to a cab.
I stayed.
Eleven months later they found me dead in my apartment on a Tuesday, next to my own sleeping pills.
So this time I did not cry.
"No hard feelings?" Trevor said, and smoothed his jacket.
"None," I said.
I put my copy of the settlement in my clutch and walked to the elevator.
Guests moved out of my way and would not meet my eyes.
Patricia caught my sleeve beside the bar.
"Don't make a scene, Claire," she hissed. "Think of that baby."
"I will," I said. "I'll think about it very carefully."
She let go, and her mouth stayed open.
Behind her, Trevor raised his glass.
"To new beginnings," he said, "and to the future of Langley Skin."
Three hundred glasses went up.
A banker in a gray suit clinked his against Trevor's.
"Congratulations on the heir," he said. "The market will love a family story."
Not one of them looked at me.
I passed the framed magazine cover of Trevor's face and the glass wall with his name etched in it.
Madison called after me, "Take care of yourself, Claire!"
She said it sweetly, with her hand on her stomach, for the cameras.
I did not turn around.
Behind me, he stepped aside to take a call.
"She signed," he said, in the easy voice he used for bankers. "All of it. She didn't even fight. We're clear."
The elevator opened.
Someone reached past me and held the door.
It was the tall man from the coat check.
"You're early, Ms. Winslow," he said.
Nobody had called me Winslow in ten years.
I stepped in, and he let the door go before I could ask early for what.
I had never seen him in my life.
