Chapter 15: The Bait

The older detective arrived at seven in the morning with two coffees and a bad temper.

"No," she said, before I finished explaining.

"You haven't heard the plan."

"I've heard enough. You want to sleep in the apartment he marked, on the night he marked, so he comes to you."

"Yes."

"That's bait, Ms. Winslow."

"It's the only way he's ever going to be on camera," I said. "A calendar page isn't a crime. You told me that yourself."

She looked at Nathaniel.

He was standing by the window with his arms crossed and his jaw set.

"Don't look at me," he said. "I said it more rudely at four o'clock this morning."

"What did he say?" the detective asked me.

"That I was out of my mind."

"And?"

"I told him I did it Trevor's way last time. I stayed in this apartment, and I let everyone manage me. I'm not hiding in a hotel while Trevor picks another night."

Nathaniel's mouth tightened, and he said nothing.

The detective sighed through her nose.

"All right. Here's how it goes. Two officers across the landing in the empty unit, camera on your door, and a wire on you. You do not touch anything he hands you. If you hear a key, you stay in bed."

"And Nathaniel?"

"Mr. Rhodes goes home."

"No," Nathaniel and I said together.

She looked at us for a long moment.

"Bathroom," she said. "Door open an inch. You do not come out unless I say so."
