Chapter 32: Say It Anyway

We drove to Vermont that night without talking.

The gold-lettered card sat in my coat pocket the whole way.

Brooklyn file. Opened January.

I had not asked him about it yet, and I would not ask in the car.

The furnace was still dead, and the farmhouse smelled of cold ash and cedar.

I stood in the front hall with my coat on.

"Say it anyway," I said.

Nathaniel set his bag down at the foot of the stairs.

"The contract says I can't."

"I know what it says. I'm asking you to break it."

"Claire."

"You broke mine already. Break his."

He took a long breath.

Then he told me all of it, from the first message on our wedding night, and he did not dress it up.

He added only one thing I had not heard.

"When the lawyer slid page nine across, I looked at the heading and I knew exactly what I was doing," he said. "I wasn't sure I could carry the answer. So I signed it instead."

"You're a coward," I said.

"Yes."

"A stupid one."

"Yes."

"I'm so angry at you that my hands are shaking."

"I know."

"And I want you so badly I can't stand here."

His eyes came up.

I took my coat off and dropped it on the floor.

"Here," I said, and went up three steps and turned.

He crossed the hall in two strides and caught my face in both hands.

He kissed me hard, and I bit his lower lip, and he groaned.

I pulled his shirt open, and buttons ticked across the boards.

"Take it off," I said, meaning everything.

He ripped my sweater over my head.

I sat down on the third stair, with the edge of the wood in my back, and dragged my jeans down one leg and kicked them off the other.
