Chapter 35: The Hollow Book

Patricia opened her front door in a gray cardigan, with her reading glasses pushed up into her hair.

"I haven't been in his room since the arrest," she said. "I'll show you the stairs. I won't go up."

"You don't have to," I said.

"I do have to wait at the bottom, though. I'd like to hear it when you find it."

Nathaniel and I climbed the stairs together.

Trevor's boyhood room had a blue bedspread and a shelf of swimming trophies.

A school photo hung on the wall of a boy with a gap in his teeth.

I looked at it for a second and felt nothing, and was a little surprised.

The shelf by the window held a row of old books.

I counted three from the left.

It was a thick green copy of A Tale of Two Cities, and when I pulled it out, it was lighter than it should have been.

The inside had been cut away.

A fat rubber band held a stack of folded pages in the hollow.

"The same trick as his study," I said.

"He never learned a new one," Nathaniel said.

I sat on the edge of the bed and took off the rubber band.

There were three pages.

The top sheet was heavy cream paper with a raised letterhead in gold.

RHODES MAISON. Paris. New York.

I felt Nathaniel go still beside me.

Under the letterhead, centered, it said LETTER OF INTENT.

I read it aloud, slowly, because I wanted him to hear every word.

"Rhodes Maison intends to purchase all rights, title and interest in the Tea Rose formulas and associated notebooks from the holder of the Winslow Family Trust, for the sum of ninety million dollars, payable within five business days of the settlor's passing."
