Chapter 39: Gold Pin

Claire's POV

I sat in the surgical waiting room in a coat that was stiff with someone else's blood.

Nathaniel was at the precinct across the river, naming the man in the gray overcoat to two detectives who kept asking him to spell his own father's name.

The older detective sat beside me with her phone on her knee.

I had called her from the church steps with my hands still wet, and she had reached the hospital forty minutes after the ambulance.

"The prosecutor's office doesn't give immunity letters to a man with a tube in his mouth," she said. "I need him awake, and I need him to nod."

"And if he doesn't wake?"

"Then your husband's father had a witness shot on the church steps, and I have nothing to show for it but a hole in a door and a man in a gray overcoat I can't find."

At one o'clock a surgeon came out and said the lawyer would live.

His jaw was wired, his tongue was stitched, and he would not speak for weeks.

The detective had a word with the surgeon, and then she took me in with her.

The lawyer lay with his face swaddled, a tube taped at his mouth, and a pad of paper beside his left hand.

He looked smaller than he had in the marble lobby.

I did not forgive him for the pills, the key or the calendar, and I did not pretend to.

I needed him alive, and for one hour that was the same as wanting it.
