Chapter 17: The Tribute Feast
Six days later I sat at the head of the same hall where Corvin had told me to share him.
The long tables were laid again, and seven envoys in grey and red sat along them with their escorts at the doors.
The senior envoy stood beside my chair holding the Alpha's torc of Greyfell, a heavy ring of old iron.
"Before the seven territories," he said, "the Concord seats Catriona MacNair as Alpha of Greyfell."
He lifted it toward my neck.
The doors banged open.
Corvin Sterne walked in with a bottle in one hand and a stranger at his shoulder.
He wore a hunter's grey coat over his best shirt.
The stranger was broad and bearded, with a long knife on his hip and Greyfell's colors pinned crookedly to his sleeve.
"Don't stop on my account," Corvin said, loudly and pleasantly. "I'm only here to see the ward-girl crowned."
Three hundred wolves went silent.
Ronan was out of his chair at my right, and I put a hand flat on his arm.
"Corvin," I said. "You yielded in the circle. Your place is the door."
"My place is the head of this hall." He drank from the bottle, wiped his mouth and grinned. "This is my wolf's pack. This is my hall. And this is the Free Hunters' captain, who will tell you what I've sold him."
The stranger bowed to the envoys, mockingly.
"The three northern passes," he said. "Signed, sealed, paid. Every caravan that crosses them pays us from now on."
The envoys stirred.
"That's a lie," said the senior envoy.
"The Alpha of Greyfell signed it," said the captain. "In his own hand."
"The Alpha of Greyfell is her," the envoy said.
