Chapter 20: The Porch Roof

Brody's POV

My bedroom window opens onto the porch roof, and in four years I had never taken anyone out on it.

I took Maggie.

The party was still going under our feet, and the shingles were cold through my jeans.

She sat beside me with her knees pulled up and Nate's flannel over her shoulders.

I had a speech.

I had worked on it for twenty minutes while Kayla was talking, and it fell apart as soon as Maggie looked at me.

"First thing," I said. "You set a term. No lies and no leaving things out."

"I remember."

"Kayla put her hand on her stomach on our lawn. She said you'd understand soon. And just now she said wait until you see what he can't walk away from."

Maggie's face went still.

"You think she's pregnant."

"I think she's going to say it."

"Is she?"

"I don't know. I know it isn't mine."

I said it fast, because it was the thing I'd been choking on since the porch.

"I haven't touched her since the night of the third. She knows it. That was the night I saw the messages, and I couldn't stand to be in the same bed."

"That's three weeks before the party."

"Yes."

"So if she says a date, it's Cody's."

"If it's anyone's." My voice came out harder than I meant. "I don't know what she is, Maggie."

"I only know she wanted something in that living room tonight, and it wasn't an apology."
