Chapter 22: Brody's Name in Her Sleep

"He isn't mine to let go," I said.

Kayla blinked.

"He's twenty-one, and he can walk out of this house whenever he likes. I'm not holding the door."

"You're holding something," she said, and the tears came on cue. "You have the captain. You have the team. I only have Cody, and now I have a baby."

"I'm not taking Cody from you."

"Then stop looking at him like that."

"Like what?"

"Like you're deciding what to do with him."

Cody made a low noise.

"Mags," he said. "Outside. Please."

Kayla's head came up.

"Cody."

"Two minutes."

"You're not going to talk about me behind my back."

"I'm going to talk about you to her face on my own porch, and then I'll come back in." He held the door open for me. "You can watch us through the window."

She looked at the window.

She did not like it, and I saw her decide not to say so.

On the porch the air was bitter.

Cody pulled the door nearly shut behind us and leaned on the rail with his eyes closed.

"I don't know what to do," he said.

"Do you believe her?"

"There's a stick. There's..." He opened his eyes. "Mags, I want to tell you something I've only worked out this week."

"Go on."

"When she told me in September that you were sleeping with Brody, I believed it. You know why?"

"Because it was easier."

"Because I had never heard of him." He laughed, wrecked. "He was the captain. Everyone knows his name. And I had never heard it from you, so I figured you'd hidden him on purpose. She said you'd been sneaking out at night."
