Chapter 28: Spiritual Doorway

Brody's POV

The tunnel under the lake stands is concrete, sixty feet long and cold, and the crowd noise comes through the ceiling in a low roar.

Kayla walked to the middle of it and stopped.

I stopped two steps behind her.

"Don't say you're sorry," she said without turning around. "I can't stand it from you."

"I wasn't going to."

"Good."

"My phone is in the bench bag," I said. "It's recording. I told Maggie I'd do that, and you should know."

She laughed once.

"Of course it is."

She turned.

Her mascara had run in two lines, and her white coat was wet at the collar where somebody's spilled beer had hit.

I had spent three months of my life thinking of her as careful.

She didn't look careful now.

"You want to know the funny part?" she said. "I picked Cody the week you got serious. I figured you'd notice. You'd get jealous and you'd say my name in that voice."

"What voice?"

"The one you use for her."

I didn't answer.

"I'd have been enough," Kayla said. "If you'd looked. I was so good at it, Brody. I was good at everything you liked."

"That wasn't the problem."

"Then what was?"

"You were never going to let me find out who you were. I only ever met the person you thought I'd want."

She stared at me.

The roar overhead rose and fell.

"I should have ended it the night I found the messages," I said. "I waited three weeks to get proof, and I let Maggie walk up those stairs while I waited. That's mine. I'll carry it."

"She forgave you."

"Not for free. Ask her."

"Everyone clapped," Kayla said. Her voice cracked. "When I said it. Six thousand people clapped."
