Chapter 12: My Name Is Elowen

The arena went silent in waves, from the royal box outward.

Corvin stayed on his knees on the sand, with one hand still on the sword, and his mouth open on the next word of the oath.

"The oath is not sworn," Lysander said, and his voice carried to the highest bench. "The Court of Judgment will sit here, now, before the people."

"Your Majesty, this is irregular!" Aldous cried.

"The Court of Judgment and the Bloodline Registry have finished their work," Lysander said. "I have the findings in my hand. You will hear them, Chief of Selection, along with everyone else."

Three judges in gray robes came down the aisle with guards on either side.

A table was carried onto the sand, and they sat behind it.

Lysander looked at me and held out his hand.

I took it, and we went down the stairs together.

The sand was hot under my slippers.

Corvin stared up at me from the ground, and I saw the exact second he understood that nothing he cried about was going to work today.

I stopped a few paces from him and turned to face the stands.

My voice shook once on the first word, and then it did not.

"My name is Elowen Thornwell."

A hum ran around the stands.

"I was born in the Thornwell pack house, the daughter of its Alpha and his first mate. I had a room with a window, and a blue vase my mother loved, and a boy who lived with us, who was supposed to be my friend."

"When I was eight years old, that boy took my hand on the night of the Full Moon Festival and told me we were going to see the lanterns."

I pointed at Corvin.

"He walked me to the edge of the festival, to a she-wolf with a cart, and he put my hand in hers, and he took the money she gave him for it."
