He Sold My Designs to the Chairman, So I Married the Chairman novel · Chapter 18 of 24
Chapter 18: Spring Collection
The tent on the Xuhui riverside smelled of hairspray, steam and wet canvas, and Yichen had been awake for thirty-one hours.
It was ten at night, the evening before the show.
Twenty-four looks hung on rolling racks in the backstage dark, each in a clear bag with a number pinned to the shoulder.
The coat that had been cut in half hung at the front of the first rack.
He had redrawn it from memory in four hours, and Zhou had recut it in nine.
The sleeve folded back over the hand exactly as before.
Pei Jinan had pulled the back door camera by breakfast.
It showed a man in a camel coat on the stairs at 1:12 in the morning with an old brass key.
Weicheng had looked at the grainy picture for a long time, and then at Yichen.
"I can have him arrested before lunch."
"No," Yichen had said. "I want him at my show."
"Why?"
"Because he still thinks he's coming to watch."
He found the Chairman waiting at the back of the tent, behind the last rack.
A green curtain made a fitting cubicle there, the size of a closet.
Weicheng stood inside it in shirtsleeves with a garment bag over his arm.
"Fifteen minutes," Yichen said. "I have the lights at eleven."
"You told me to be fitted."
"I did."
The bag unzipped.
It was the first suit Yichen had ever made for him, in charcoal wool.
He had cut it over six weeks of late nights, from a body he knew better than his own pattern block.
Weicheng put it on while Yichen watched.
