Chapter 21: The Seat

Qiao Weicheng walked into the extraordinary meeting of shareholders at ten on Monday, a week after the show.

For the first time in his life he was early.

The room was the grand hall on the third floor, the same one where the Golden Needle had been given out in October.

Four hundred chairs had been set out in rows.

Director Meng sat at the front in black wool, with a folder on her knee.

She had thirty-nine percent of the shares in proxies behind her, held by the five directors who had come over to her side.

She had been given a week.

He had counted the days.

"The Chairman's judgment has failed this group," she said, from the lectern, with the old bright voice scraped thin. "He struck a prize from the register by his own hand. He married a rival claimant. The Milan scandal reached the front pages on his watch. I move that the shareholders remove him from the executive seat, and that Meridian be sold to a house with sounder governance."

A murmur ran along the rows.

Weicheng took his seat in the front, in the chair at the aisle.

He had expected to feel anger, and felt only a great quiet.

On his right sat Pei Jinan with a box file on his knees.

On his left was an empty chair.

It was not empty for long.

Lan Yichen came down the centre aisle in the black suit, with a roll of paper under his arm.

Every head in the hall turned and followed him.
