He Spoke Her Language, So I Said Goodbye novel · Chapter 1 of 24
Chapter 1: The Seatbelt
On the way to her wedding Willa watches her fiancé buckle her bridesmaid in and listens to them laugh in Italian, then records them in the hotel garage and asks for a cable to the ballroom sound system.
On my wedding day, my fiancé pulled over in front of my bridesmaid's apartment building before we even reached the hotel.
I stood on the curb in my hoodie, holding my wedding dress in its garment bag.
Gianna came down the steps in her bridesmaid dress with her shoes in one hand.
"Gianna gets carsick in the back," Dante said. "Do you mind, amore?"
I didn't mind.
I had been his girlfriend for three years and his fiancée for fourteen months, and I had never once minded.
I climbed into the back seat with the dress across my knees.
Dante leaned across the front seat and pulled the belt over Gianna's shoulder.
He took his time clicking it in.
Three cars behind us, a gray sedan sat at the curb with its engine running.
It belonged to Dante's older brother, who had told the whole family he was driving straight to the hotel.
He didn't get out, and I figured he was on the phone with the caterer.
Then Dante pulled into traffic, and the two of them started talking.
They talked in Italian, fast and low, and Gianna laughed so hard she had to put her hand on his arm.
They had both taken Italian in college.
They had begged me to sign up with them, and I had said no, because I was working two jobs and had no room for a third thing.
Eleven years later I still couldn't follow more than "grazie" and "the check, please."
"What's so funny?" I asked from the back.
Dante glanced at me in the mirror and smiled.
"Nothing, amore. It's her cousin's wedding story. You'd have to hear it in Italian."
"Tell me the English version."
"It doesn't work in English," Gianna said, and they both started laughing again.
I looked out the window and counted lampposts until we reached Back Bay.
The hotel's garage was underground and almost empty at that hour.
Dante parked in the far corner by a concrete pillar.
"Go on up," he said. "The suite's on twelve. We'll bring the flowers."
"I need my veil from the trunk."
"Leave it. I'll grab it."
His voice was easy, the same voice he used when he said he was working late.
I got out and shut the door, and then I stood by the pillar with my phone in my hand.
Over the last year I had put a translation app on it for Sunday dinners at his mother's table.
It had a button that listened and wrote out what it heard in English.
I pressed the button and walked back toward the car.
His window was cracked an inch.
I stopped behind the trunk where the mirror couldn't see me.
The screen lit up a half second behind their voices.
"Two more hours," Dante said. "Then I can stop pretending to be nervous."
"Poor Willa," Gianna said. "She picked out the napkins herself."
"She picked out everything. She still thinks the restaurant was my idea."
"It was her money."
"It was her mother's money, and Willa gave it to me with a bow on it."
They laughed, and I kept my eyes on the screen.
"She said no to Italian in college and she's still saying no," Gianna said. "Eleven years. I could have told her I was moving in with you and she'd have asked what's funny."
"She'd have asked me to translate."
"Go on, then. Say your vows for me."
The words came up one at a time, and the last one was English.
"I do," Dante said, in a flat little voice, and Gianna laughed until she coughed.
Then the car went quiet.
I did not look in the window.
I knew what that quiet was.
I had heard it for a year in his apartment doorway and called it a phone call, a nap, a coat being hung up.
I stopped the recording and watched the file save.
Every word of it was in a language I had said no to once, politely, years ago.
I walked to the elevator and pressed the button.
On the way up I took off my ring and held it in my fist until the doors opened.
So I stepped out.
The ballroom was at the end of the twelfth floor hall, and a man in a hotel vest was setting a microphone stand beside the altar.
Rows of white chairs faced it, and the ushers had started on the programs.
I walked up to the man in the vest.
"Excuse me," I said. "Do you have a cable that connects a phone to the sound system?"
