Chapter 14: Tesoro
Dante's Table at nine in the morning smelled like bleach and last night's garlic.
The chairs were still upside down on the tables, and the only light came from the kitchen pass.
I had told Bridget I was sleeping in.
She had a double shift and a bad habit of believing me when I was tired.
Dante sat at the corner table with a mug of coffee and an envelope under his hand.
He looked well rested, and I hated him for it.
"You came alone," he said.
"You asked."
"I did." He smiled. "Sit."
"I'll stand."
He slid the envelope across the table.
It was thin, and I knew before I touched it that it wasn't sixty thousand dollars.
"Two thousand," Dante said. "Cash. It's more than I have, honestly, and I'm giving it to you as a good-faith gesture."
"I'm owed sixty."
"You're owed nothing, legally. My lawyer says so. But I'm not a monster." He turned a sheet of paper around on the table. "Sign this, delete the recording, and take down whatever else you've posted. Then we're friends again."
"We were never friends."
"Weren't we?"
He said it so gently that for one second I almost heard the man I'd lived with for three years.
Then Gianna came out of the kitchen with a tray of clean glasses, saw me and set it down hard.
"She's here to beg," Gianna said.
"I'm here for my money."
"Your money." She laughed. "It was never yours after you handed it over. You wanted to be part of something, and now you're mad that you paid for a seat."
