Chapter 8: Sunday Dinner
Luca didn't take his fingers off the towel.
"He means Saturday," he said, in a level voice. "I stood at the back of that ballroom and heard every word he said about you. And I walked you out the kitchen door. That's what he wants you to hold against me."
"It's not what I'm holding," I said.
"Then it's not what he's after." He turned his head. "Dante. Get out of my kitchen."
Dante looked at him for a long moment.
Then he picked up his bag of ice, tucked it under his arm and went out the way he had come.
The door swung shut on its spring.
"He's trying to make you doubt me," Luca said. "It's the easiest thing he's ever done."
I looked down at my arm.
The towel had gone pink and the cut had stopped.
I didn't doubt him.
I said so, and I meant it, and the kitchen was very quiet afterward.
On Wednesday, Rosa called me again.
This time she didn't mention the envelope.
"Sunday, cara. Dinner at two. I want to say my sorry to your face, with the family at the table. And I have something to tell you about the restaurant."
"Is Dante coming?"
"He is my son."
"That's not a no."
"He is not coming to sit by you," she said. "I promise it."
"I'll bring wine," I said, and hung up before I could change my mind.
Sunday dinner at Ferraro's was the same as it had always been.
There was the long table in the back, with fourteen chairs.
There were three different tablecloths, because Rosa could never choose.
