Chapter 16: Hers to Lead

I did not let him carry me.

I took his wrapped hand in my hand and walked him up the cabin steps myself.

Crane had filed, and the ring was tomorrow at noon.

I left that on the porch with my boots.

Inside, the single room was dark and smelled of old smoke.

I did not light the lamp.

The moon came through the window and lay across the iron bed, and across the wall of scratch marks above it.

Bram stopped when he saw the wall.

"Not tonight," I said. "Tonight it's just a wall."

"Wynne."

"You said you wouldn't touch me unless I asked. I'm asking again. Don't touch me until I say."

His jaw worked.

"Understood."

I pushed the coat off his shoulders.

It fell to the floor.

I unbuttoned his shirt slowly, from the throat down, and every button I opened I put my mouth to the skin it uncovered.

He held his arms stiffly at his sides.

His chest was hot and hard under my lips, and his heart was slamming.

When I reached his belt he made a rough noise, and his hands curled into fists.

"Say it," I said.

"I want you so badly I can't see."

"Better."

I stripped him.

I had not seen him naked in ten years, and the man in front of me was heavier through the shoulders than the boy I remembered and carved harder everywhere else.

His cock stood thick and flushed against his stomach, and when I wrapped my fingers around it he shuddered and said my name.

"Sit on the bed," I said.

He sat.

The old frame creaked.

I stood between his knees and took off my own shirt.

I was too thin, and I knew it.

My ribs showed, and the scars from the silver cuffs ringed both wrists, and I had not been looked at in a decade.

He looked at me anyway.

He did not look away from any of it.
