Chapter 22: The Ninth Chair

Ashmoor voted at dawn, and it took them four minutes.

The beta came up the logging road in a pickup with half the pack in the back to tell us.

"Unanimous," he said at the cabin door, and held out the red gold ring to Bram. "They said if he's going to kneel to anyone, he can do it with the ring on."

Bram looked at me.

I took the ring from the beta's hand, and I slid it back onto Bram's finger myself.

"That's the only time I'll do that," I said.

"Understood."

"Good. Now get dressed. We're due in the Long Hall."

The eight packs sat again in the carved arc.

This time the ninth chair was not empty.

I had not planned to sit in it.

I walked to it because every Alpha in the hall was looking at it, and then at me, and the silence asked.

The black oak was cold under my hands.

I sat.

Nobody bowed.

I had asked them not to, and they kept their heads up, and every one of them looked as if it cost them something.

Bram stood at the foot of the dais, where an Alpha stands.

I gave him a nod, and he nodded back.

"Larkin," said the old Alpha of the north. "The Alliance is yours to order."

"Then I'll order it," I said.

My voice carried farther than I had expected.

"First. No wolf in the eight territories is dosed with wolfsbane against their will. Not for safety, not for discipline, not for a charter. Anyone who gives it answers to this chair.

"Second. Holloway Farm is closed. What's left of the barn will be torn down, and the eleven will not go back to anyone's house until they say so.
