Chapter 18: The Barbecue

The Spurlocks had pitched four white tents on the hill behind their ranch house, and four hundred people stood under them with paper plates.

A flatbed trailer draped in bunting served as the stage.

A banner behind it read SPURLOCK FOR TEXAS in red, white and blue.

I stood at the edge of the crowd in a green dress I had bought on my own card.

It was a darker green than the one Conway picked.

My father wore his church suit and a straw hat, and he held my elbow in a grip that was trying to be casual.

"I don't know about this, Greta Mae," Gus said.

"You don't have to know."

"I smell cobbler," my father said.

I looked down the buffet and found it.

A dozen foil pans sat in a row at the end of the dessert table.

Every crust had a five-pointed star cut in the top.

A hand-lettered card read SPURLOCK FAMILY PEACH COBBLER.

I felt Emilio, behind me, go still.

"Mrs. Spurlock got the recipe from the cookbook I wrote for her last Christmas," I said. "She didn't ask what the star was."

"It's yours," Emilio said.

"It's my mother's."

He did not say anything else.

At the long picnic tables under the nearest tent, six men in boots and pressed shirts sat together with iced tea.
