Chapter 9: Rule Two Is Retired

The knock came at two in the morning.

I had not slept.

I opened the door of the condo in a T-shirt and found Hazel on the landing, still in the black dress from dinner, with her coat open and her shoes in her hand.

Her face was dry.

That frightened me more than tears would have.

"He had them drawn up before the dinner," she said. "He signed them before he sat down at my table."

"Hazel."

"He wants it finished before the gala. He wants me gone from the house by Saturday."

"Come in."

She stepped inside and shut the door behind her.

She put her shoes on the floor and stood in my empty living room, where the rug and the couch were the only things left of Natalie's choosing.

"Rule two," she said.

"I know."

"It's over."

"Hazel."

"Don't make me say it twice, Miles."

I crossed the room in three steps.

She had her arms around my neck before I touched her, and her mouth was already against mine.

She kissed hard and fast.

I backed her against the wall and my hands found the zipper at her spine.

"Tell me what you want," I said, into her throat.

"You."

"Say it plain."

"I want your cock inside me. I've wanted it since your hand was bleeding on my counter."

I had no answer to that.

I picked her up, and she locked her legs around my waist, and I carried her down the hall to the bedroom.

The sheets were cold.

I put her down on them and she pulled my shirt over my head and threw it.

I got the dress down her shoulders and then her hips, and she lay there in black underwear with her hair loose on the pillow.

Her body was pale and long, and a little scar ran along her ribs that I wanted to put my mouth on.
