Chapter 18: The Order He Signed

The Council met in the provisions hall, at the long table where I had once signed for six years of winter flour.

Five elders sat behind it.

The pack filled the benches behind me, and the wall at the back was lined with patrol families standing.

Bram's uncle sat at the far end with a folder.

"We are here on the matter of the regency," the old elder said. "Mrs. Brandvold has been summoned to answer a petition."

"She's no regent," the uncle said. "She's a runaway wife who took the heir over the border."

"Before you go on," a voice said from the door, "I have something to say."

Bram came up the aisle in his work coat.

He hadn't shaved, his gait heavy and grim.

"Alpha," the elder said. "You are not on the list."

"Then put me on it."

The elder looked at the uncle, and the uncle looked at his folder.

"Speak," the elder said.

Bram stood in front of the table and put both hands on his belt, because he had nowhere else to put them.

"Almost a year ago, I sent a patrol over the north pass at dusk," he said. "The patrol leader, Greta's husband, told me the east face was loaded with snow."

The hall had gone completely quiet.

"I knew it," Bram said. "I told him I needed the patrol on record before the Council met. When he refused to sign the order, I told him I'd find someone who would."

"He signed. The order is in his name."
