Chapter 21: The Seat He Gave Up

Cade's POV

I wrote the letter at the ranch table at two in the morning, and it took me nine tries.

The ninth one said the fewest words.

I, Cade Merrin, Alpha of Wind Valley, give up the seat of this pack to my foreman, effective at the next moon.

I read it twice and signed it.

Willa was Luna-regent of Ironwood now, which meant a hall, a Council, three hundred households, a daughter who was the heir, and a border that would test her every week.

I'd watched her do it for six years from the other side of a valley.

I wasn't going to be the man who sat forty minutes away and called that love.

My foreman came into the kitchen in his socks, with his hair on end.

"You're up," he said.

"Read this."

He read it standing.

When he got to the end he put it down on the table very carefully.

"You're quitting the ranch."

"I'm passing it to you."

"You're quitting the ranch for a woman."

"For a Luna," I said. "It's different. She needs a second at her side who isn't a rival pack's Alpha. The Council will never accept a regent who has a man across the border holding a seat of his own."
