Chapter 10: Quiet Parts

"I know about your left side," I said.

The line went so quiet I could hear the car's turn signal clicking on his end.

Theo, beside me on the bench, did not move.

"I don't know what you mean," Wyatt said.

"The concussion. The taps. The reason I came up on your right for five years."

"Lena, you're upset."

"You can't see me when I'm on your left. You can't see anyone."

"That's not..." He stopped.

When he spoke again, his voice was very low, and I realized I had never heard it without the warmth on it.

"Who's in the room with you?"

"Nobody."

"Is it the Canadian?"

"Wyatt."

"It's the Canadian. He's put this in your head."

"I watched the tapes myself," I said. "I was in every one of them."

For a long moment, I listened to his breathing.

"All right," he said. "Let's be adults."

"Go ahead."

"You did know. You were there when I got hit, and you called my mother, and you've counted me in for five years. You knew something was wrong the whole time, and you didn't tell the federation, and you let me skate in two national championships."

I stared at the phone.

"I asked you to," I said. "You told me they'd bench you."

"I don't remember it that way. Neither will the board." His voice was gaining speed. "If this comes out, it's you who hid a medical condition from the federation for five years, Lena. Not me. I'm the injured one. And I'll tell them you took our free skate music with you when you left."

"I didn't take your music."

"Your name is on the choreography credit."

"It's my choreography."

"So you'll say it, and I'll say you hid a concussion, and we'll see whose story the committee likes better."
