Chapter 18: The Crew

I read it three times.

Then I carried the laptop downstairs, past Leo asleep on the couch with Lucy on his chest, and out onto the porch.

I called Libby.

"Entrant two-fourteen," I said.

"What?"

"That's me. I won."

She screamed so loud I had to hold the phone away from my ear.

Inside, Lucy woke up and screamed back.

Leo came to the door with her, squinting.

"What happened? Is somebody hurt?"

I held up the laptop.

He read it with Lucy chewing on his collar.

When he got to the last line, he stopped.

"She'll have to say your name," he said. "In front of everyone she knows."

"She doesn't know it's me."

"No." He looked at me over Lucy's head. "Are you going to tell her?"

"No."

"Are you going to go?"

"I haven't decided."

He nodded.

He didn't tell me what he thought I should do.

I noticed that he didn't.

That afternoon we drove down to the harbor park together for the first time since June.

It was nearly done and badly behind.

The foreman met me at the fence with a clipboard and a face.

"Two guys quit," he said. "One broke his wrist. We've got sixty blocks of granite left to set and three weeks to the opening."

I looked at the blocks lying in the gravel.

Leo was looking at them too.

"Can I ask you something?" he said to me. "You can say no."
